When I was 17 I started moving furniture across country on the weekends. I had recently adopted a child (long story for another time). I found out quickly that it was incredibly difficult to get hired and hold down a full time job with that responsibility, while still trying to complete high school! The weekend moving gig seemed to be working so I kept at it. I learned so much about timing, logistics, and customer service during that time.
A year later from that first move, I was turned down for a moving job because I was a woman. It hurt. I felt disrespected as an entrepreneur and as an individual. Decision time. I remember thinking “Ok. That’s great. I want to hire people anyway. I don’t want to be moving everything on my own all the time.” So, I hired my first crew. We’ve been going full metal jacket ever since.
